Storm Shelter

The City of Mt. Ayr FEMA approved Storm Shelter is located at Judge Lewis Park in the city of Mount Ayr. After regular pool hours, the shelter will be opened by Emergency personnel in the event of straight-line winds or a tornado warning. The information relating to when the shelter will be opened will be relayed thru the Alert Notification message system. To sign up for this service please visit with Alert Iowa.

Entrance to the shelter is on the east side of the building. For safety reasons, no animals are allowed in the shelter. Therefore, other plans need to be made for your pets in a disaster. The shelter is capable of sheltering approximately 230 people. The shelter was built with FEMA Funding (Homeland Security), local fundraising efforts by the Aquatic Fund-Raising Committee, match funds and donations.

The second FEMA FEMA approved Storm Shelter is located at Mount Ayr Highschool. This is on the East side of the building and also serves as the wrestling room. The shelter will be opened by Emergency personnel or school staff in the event of straight-line winds or a tornado warning. For safety reasons, no animals are allowed in the shelter. Therefore, other plans need to be made for your pets in a disaster.
